Recent global trending around tariffs has created questions for businesses about how to best handle these additional costs. Some businesses are adjusting prices, but others are opting to add surcharges given the fluidity of the situation.
For those preferring the latter approach, Zoey has updated a tutorial that shows how to use our existing Auto-Add Products to Cart feature to add a surcharge automatically when a given item is being purchased, effectively allowing an additional fee to be added to account for tariffs (although this setup also works for any surcharges you need to auto-apply when items are purchased).
A virtual product is created, which is the item that is added when a surcharge is needed to be applied. Then Product Attributes are set up to be used when the attributes are created on products. Then, for the products you wish to apply the surcharge, you attach the products. Finally, you create the auto-add product rule to apply the surcharge when the attributes are present.
The best part of this approach is granular control over each product. Since you can set it at a product level, if specific products are being impacted in different ways than others, one rule setup can allow you to set specific surcharge percentages on different products.
This can be done if you need to charge a surcharge for other reasons. For instance, if you need to charge a deposit per can due to a state law, this same rule structure can allow for this. And you can also create multiple rules, if you need to message different surcharges in different ways based on your product mix.
